1800 Tequila has tapped surrealist Pedro Friedeberg for its first artist-helmed twist on the brand's Milenio extra añejo. In honor of World Art Day (Monday), Friedeberg designed 1,800 bespoke bottles etched with abstract forms that pay homage to ancient Mexican architecture. Born in Italy but raised in Mexico after the onset of World War II, Friedeberg is renowned throughout the country for his large-scale sculptures and murals that reinterpret sacred symbols. This time around, Friedeberg's style has been applied to the trapezoidal silhouette of 1800 Milenio, initially launched under the tagline "Edicion del Nuevo Milenio" (New Millenium Edition) in 2000. The expression is aged for at least three years in American oak barrels before resting in ex-cognac casks for an additional four months.
“I have a strong affinity for 1800 Tequila and its exquisite taste, especially 1800 Milenio, which can be likened to magical nectar," Friedeberg said in a news release. "I find the 1800 Milenio bottle very architecturally inspired, making it the perfect canvas to display one of my designs. The featured artwork draws inspiration from my early encounters with architecture, showcasing fundamental structures of thought and form, with elements that pay homage to pyramids and agave."
Said to balance flavors of vanilla, red fruit and cinnamon, 1800 Milenio Artist Series x Pedro Friedeberg is set to retail in-store and online at a suggested retail price of $225. 1800 was first launched in 1975 by Becle, the tequila supercompany behind Jose Cuervo, Gran Centenario, Maestro Dobel and more. Over the years, the brand has developed a particular affinity for limited-edition releases. Earlier this month, 1800 released its orange liqueur-finished GuachiMonton

, an homage to the Los Guachimontones archeological site in the valleys of Jalisco, Mexico. Before that, 1800 collaborated with the likes of Keith Haring, Basquiat and Shepard Fairy for its ongoing Artist Series, and at one point released a set of NFL co-signed bottles in collaboration with the LA Rams, Las Vegas Raiders and more.
